First Time in Tamil Cinema History: Screenplay of Upcoming Film ‘Censor’ by Director Ramnath Palanikumar to Be Published as a Book Before the Making of the Movie

Chennai, 21 Oct 2026: In a historic move breaking a century-old tradition of Tamil cinema, the team behind the upcoming Tamil feature film 'Censor' has announced a pioneering initiative: the complete, official shooting screenplay will be published as a book prior to the making of the movie.

In Tamil cinema, releasing a screenplay in book form is traditionally an honour reserved for block busters or critically acclaimed films, occurring long after their theatrical runs have concluded. 'Censor', by director Ramnath Palanikumar of 'Ambasamudram Ambani', 'Thirunaal', and 'Aadhaar' fame, turns this convention on its head. He also penned the screenplay and dialogues for 'Dindigul Sarathy'. By publishing its written blueprint ahead of time, the project marks the first time in Tamil cinema history that an unedited, raw narrative of a feature film will be made available to the public before it hits the big screen.

The pre-release publication aligns directly with the thematic core of the film's title, 'Censor', serving as a powerful statement on artistic authenticity and narrative purity. Readers, aspiring filmmakers, and cinema enthusiasts are invited to experi ence the screenplay's dramatic structure, unedited scenes, and original visualsetups precisely as written by the author, before directorial interpretations, editing choices, or regulatory modifi cations take effect.

Speaking about this milestone initiative, Ramnath Palanikumar stated: "A screenplay is the soul of a film and a distinct work of literature in its own right. In Tamil cinema, we traditionally cele brate the screenplay only after celebrating the stars on screen. By releasing the screenplay of 'Censor' before the film's theatrical arrival, we want audiences to experience the story in its purest, uncompromised form. This is an effort toward complete transparency and a dedication to the written word in Tamil cinema.”

The book offers a rare look into the narrative crafting of an unreleased Tamil film. More details about the movie will be announced in a phased manner.
