Chennai, 21 Oct 2026: The Tamil Nadu Government is consi dering the 13.22-acre Pallavan House campus in Chennai as an alternative site for the proposed Rs. 1,200 crore Secretariat and Assembly complex following sustained protests by fishing communities against the earlier plan to construct it at Foreshore Estate.
According to government sources, the Pallavan House campus, which houses the headquarters of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) and State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), along with two MTC depots, is among the locations being examined. However, no final decision has been taken, and an official announcement is expected within a week.
The government-o wned campus comprises 7.55 acres occupied by MTC depots, 3.957 acres belonging to the old SETC campus and 1.701 acres housing Pallavan House. Why the Pallavan House site is being considered.
Officials said the location offers several advantages, including the availability of government-owned land, eliminating the need for fresh land acquisition or displacement of residents.
Its proximity to bus services, suburban railway stations and Metro Rail connecti vity would also make commuting easier for Secretariat employees and members of the public.
The campus is also located close to the Omandurar Government Estate, where a new Secretariat com plex was constructed during the previous DMK regime.
MTC and SETC headquarters may move to CMBT Koyambedu. If the Pallavan House site is finalised, the government will have to relocate the MTC and SETC head quarters and the existing bus depots.
Officials said the Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) at Koyambedu could be considered for shifting the transport corporations' headquarters, enabling adminis trative and operational activities to be monitored from one location.
Foreshore Estate plan faced protests from fishing communities.
