TN to Sell Rice at RS. 40-50/KG Through Cooperative Stores

Chennai, 15 Oct 2026: With the price of fine-quality rice rising to Rs 7080 per kg from Rs 5060 in August, the Tamil Nadu Govern ment is considering selling rice at Rs 4050 per kg through coope rative stores to provide relief to consumers facing rising household expenses. Officials from the Cooperation and Food Departments are holding discussions o n procuring rice from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and other states for distri bution through coopera tive outlets at subsi dised rates. The proposed move is aimed at easing the financial burden on households, particu larly low- and middle income families, as rice accounts for a significant portion of their monthly grocery expenses.

The sharp increase in retail prices over the past two months has prompted the Govern ment to explore alter native procurement and distribution arrangements to make the staple available at affordable rates. If implemented, the initiative would allow consumers to purchase rice through cooperative stores at prices substantially lower than prevailing market rates. However, officials are yet to finalise the procu rement arrangements, selling price, partici pating cooperative outlets and implemen tation schedule. A formal announce ment is expected once the Government takes a final decision on the proposal.
