V. Venkatasubramanian, Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) of 1993 batch, assumed charge as the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Southern Circle, Bengaluru in September 2026. His jurisdiction as Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, covers Southern Railway, South Western Railway, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited, Chennai Metro Rail Limited and Kochi Metro Rail Limited.
An Electrical Engineering officer with extensive experience in railway operations and infrastructure, Shri Venkatasubramanian has served in Chennai, Salem and Palakkad Divisions of Southern Railway and Bengaluru Division of South Western Railway during his career. He has held important responsibilities in Electric locomotive maintenance and operations, besides being associated with the construction and maintenance of traction distribution systems.
Prior to assuming charge as Commissioner of Railway Safety, Shri Venkatasubramanian was serving as Executive Director in the Railway Board, where he was responsible for electric and diesel locomotives and crew.
Commissioner of Railway Safety – Functions
· Authorization for opening of new Railway/Metro lines.
· Investigation into serious Railway accidents.
· Sanction for execution of minor works related with modifications.
· Condonation of infringements to Schedule of Dimensions; sanction for movement of Over Dimensional Consignment (ODC) on Indian Railways.
· Periodical inspection of running lines and other Railway/Metro assets.
