Kauvery Hospital Radial Road Successfully Performs Advanced Keyhole Mitral Valve Replacement on High-Risk 65-YEAR-OLD Patient

Chennai, 27 Oct 2026 : Kauvery Hospital Radial Road, Chennai, has success fully performed an advanced, minimally invasive Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) on a 65-year-old man with advanced heart failure and severe breathlessness caused by the failure of a previously implanted tissue heart valve. The procedure was completed in approximately an hour without complications, and the patient was discharged the following day.

The patient had a history of heart valve disease and had under gone open-heart surgery with tissue valve implantation in 2019.

Over time, the implanted valve deve loped a severe leak, resulting in lung congestion, worsening breathlessness and advanced heart failure symptoms. His condition had deteriorated to the extent that he was unable to lie down comfortably due to severe breathing difficulties.

Following a compre hensive evaluation by the heart team at Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Ajith Pillai, Head of Department, Cardio log y, Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, Chennai, the patient was diagnosed with severe leakage of the previously implanted prosthetic valve. While redo valve replacement through conventional open-heart surgery was an option, his clinical condition and compro mised lung function placed him at high risk for another major surgical intervention.

Considering these risks, the multidiscip linary team opted for TMVR, a minimally invasive procedure that enables valve replacement without opening the chest. Given the patient’s poor lung condition, the procedure was performed under local anaes thesia. The intervention was completed safely and effectively in approximately an hour, with no compli cations reported. The patient showed imme diate improvement following the procedure. At his one-month follow-up, a cardiac scan confirmed that the newly implanted valve was functioning well.

Commenting on the achievement, Prof. Dr. Ajith Pillai, Head of Department, Cardio log y, Kauvery Hospital, Radial Road, Chennai, said, “For patients with advanced heart failure and a failing previously implanted heart valve, repeat open-heart surgery can carry significant risks, particu larly when lung function is compromised. These technologies are now available in India, including Chennai, at a level comparable with leading cardiovascular centres in North America and Europe.”
