Cultivate Savings Habit, CM Advises

Chennai, 31 Oct 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has called upon people to practise thrift, avoid unneces sary expenditure and make savings a regular habit to ensure financial security and a prosperous future.

In his World Thrift Day message on October 30, the Chief Minister said the day was observed every year to highlight the importance of thrift and savings. Quoting a couplet of saint-poet Thiru valluvar, he empha sised that living beyond one's financial means could even tually lead to economic ruin. He advised people to follow the principle of spending only after setting aside savings, rather than saving whatever remained after meeting their expenses. Even small savings made regularly could provide substantial support during emergencies, he said.

The Chief Minister cautioned against borrowing money for luxurious spending, warning that such practices could push individuals into serious financial difficulties. He urged everyone to assess their income and spend accordingly. He also encouraged people to open savings accounts at nearby post offices to ensure that their savings remained secure. Calling for a collective commitment to financial discipline, Vijay said people should make thrift a duty, savings a habit and a prosperous life their goal.
