Chennai : On the occasion of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Chennai is urging men, particularly those in higher-risk age groups, to prioritise prostate health and seek timely medical evaluation. Dr. Arun Kumar Balakrishnan, Chief Uro-Oncologist, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgeon, Managing Director, AINU, highlighted that prostate cancer can develop silently and that the absence of urinary symptoms does not necessarily rule out disease. Warning signs such as changes in urination, difficulty starting or maintaining urine flow, increased frequency, blood in urine or semen, and persistent bone or back pain should be evaluated by a doctor, especially among older men and those with a family history of prostate cancer.
Mr. Karthik Kumar, Renowned Actor, said that prostate health is an important part of men’s overall well-being and encouraged men to be proactive about regular health conversations and timely medical evaluation. When prostate cancer is suspected, doctors may recommend clinical assessment, PSA testing, digital rectal examination, multiparametric MRI and, when required, biopsy. Treatment depends on the cancer’s risk category, stage and the individual’s health and preferences, with options ranging from active surveillance for selected lower-risk cancers to surgery, radiation therapy and systemic treatments.
As part of its awareness initiative, AINU Chennai has launched “Mr. Prostate – Ennamama Kannu, Sowkiyama?”, encouraging men to discuss prostate health even without noticeable symptoms. AINU is also encouraging men aged 40 years and above to consider proactive prostate health evaluation in consultation with a healthcare professional. To support early evaluation, AINU Chennai is organising a FREE Prostate Health Check-up Camp from September 24 to 30, 2026, including PSA Test, Uroflowmetry, Ultrasound, CUE (Complete Urine Examination) and Doctor Consultation.
