High blood pressure and Diabetes are the most common cause of kidney failure: Medical Experts

World Kidney Day is observed worldwide to raise awareness of the increasing burden of kidney diseases and to strive for kidney health for everyone, everywhere. Kidney disease is a non-communicable disease (NCD) and currently affects around 850 million people worldwide and one in ten adults has chronic kidney disease (CKD). The burden of Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) is increasing, and is projected to become the 5th most common cause of years of life lost globally by 2040. Every year between 8 and 10% of the population have some form of kidney damage due to chronic kidney disease.

Diabetes, High Blood pressure, Overweight and obesity are the most common cause of kidney failure says, Dr Muthukumar P, Senior Consultant – Nephrology, Gleneagles Global Health City. It is the end result of a gradual loss of kidney function and In fact, some people do not even know they have kidney disease until their kidneys fail because people with early kidney disease may not have any symptoms. Symptoms usually show up late in the progression of the diseases added Dr Muthukumar.

Healthy kidneys remove wastes and extra fluid from your blood. But when your kidneys fail, wastes and extra fluid can build up in your blood and make you feel sick. You may have some of the following symptoms:

  • nausea
  • trouble sleeping
  • poor appetite
  • weakness
  • tiredness
  • itching
  • weight loss
  • muscle cramps (especially in the legs)
  • swelling of your feet or ankles
  • anemia (a low blood count)
  • trouble sleeping

Kidney disease can be prevented and progression to end-stage kidney disease can be delayed with appropriate access to basic diagnostics and early treatment said Dr Muthukumar. There are two treatments for kidney failure — dialysis and kidney transplant. The dialysis treatments will take over some of the work of your damaged kidneys and remove wastes and extra fluid from your body. This will make many of your symptoms better added Dr Muthukumar.

Kidney transplantation offers best outcomes for the end stage renal failure patients in terms of longer survival and overall quality of life said Dr K Muruganandham, Head of Department & Senior Consultant – Urology, Gleneagles Global Health City. Renal Transplant will completely replace the kidney function. However the patients have to take lifelong meditations to prevent rejection of Tranplant kidney added Dr Muruganandham.
